Separate packet cost from service cost

A provider does not begin with an empty network link for every subscriber. It first pays to observe the chain, place infrastructure near useful peers, maintain the receiver, and keep the service available. Adding one destination afterward usually adds only transit and a small amount of operational work.

That distinction explains the market's wide price range. A $100 feed and a $1,500 feed may carry the same wire format. Their differences can instead be location, source position, output processing, support expectations, redundancy, or simply the seller's view of the value delivered.

Redundancy is part of the bill

A normal FEC set contains data and parity shreds. Parity consumes bandwidth, but it lets the receiver recover from missing datagrams. Removing that overhead would make the feed cheaper to move and less useful under loss, so it belongs in any honest capacity estimate.

The practical calculation is local. Count bytes arriving on the destination interface during a representative window, include protocol overhead, and multiply by the provider's metered rate. Do not infer your bill from the size of a decoded block.

The service also needs alerting, capacity headroom, upgrades, incident response, and someone responsible when traffic arrives during an inconvenient hour. A low marginal transfer cost does not mean the operation is free.

Why one price cannot fit every buyer

Paying more can make sense when the higher-priced service reaches a required metro, supplies decoded output, offers a contractual guarantee, or provides private-network transport. It makes less sense when the only justification is an unverified claim that identical bytes must be more expensive to forward.

Self-hosting becomes attractive when a strategy needs many destinations, source-level control, or a provider-independent path. For a single location, buying an established feed usually exchanges a fixed infrastructure project for a predictable subscription.

Questions worth asking before purchase

Check the billing unit, overage rule, ingest location, loss methodology, and trial terms. A short experiment on the intended receiver is more informative than a universal ranking.

The useful comparison is total cost to a tradeable signal: transport, decoding, operations, and delay. A cheap raw feed can be the expensive choice if it moves engineering work into your own critical path.
